Our Whole Lives (or OWL) is comprehensive and science-based sex, sexuality, and sexual health education. It was developed by a consortium of open-minded religious organizations in response to the upsetting lack of accurate sex ed provided by schools across the United States. From the UUA website (Unitarian Universalist Association, who participated in constructing the curriculum):
“Honest, accurate information about sexuality changes lives. It dismantles stereotypes and assumptions, builds self-acceptance and self-esteem, fosters healthy relationships, improves decision making, and has the potential to save lives. For these reasons and more, we are proud to offer Our Whole Lives (OWL), a comprehensive, lifespan sexuality education curricula for use in both secular settings and faith communities.” (http://www.uua.org/re/owl)
OWL, as the name suggests, is intended to span a person’s entire lifetime. As a result, there are courses and curricula designed for every age, beginning with kindergarten (where classes are focused on proper language for body parts, and basic consent and body autonomy), and stretching all the way through the changes facing older adults.
OWL is offered by Collage Colorado because we believe that an important part of identity exploration is a proper and holistic understanding of sex and sexuality. OWL education leads to safer and healthier relationships, and greater self-advocacy regarding body autonomy; teens who complete an OWL class are substantially less likely to become pregnant at a young age, or be exposed to STI’s.
Please contact us if you have any questions regarding OWL, its curricula, or to schedule classes at your school or organization.
